Creative Joburg

Private tours only

Sometimes we here at Coffeebeans think that actually Johannesburg should have been awarded the World Design Capital 2014 status. Just sometimes. Because there is so much overt design in the City of Gold, so much street-level creativity, that you could be forgiven for thinking that in fact Jozi is the creative capital of South Africa. The economic and financial capital of the country doesn’t have creative status, and certainly doesn’t market itself as a creative city, but there is powerful creative energy in Johannesburg, and over these four days we unpack as much of it as possible, from art, architecture and design, through food, film and fashion.

Along our four day journey we meet a range of creative minds, including artists, designers, architects, musicians, planners, brewers and makers.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • The Soweto Theatre
  • Public art tour Soweto and Johannesburg
  • Maboneng Arts in Soweto
  • Maboneng Precinct, downtown Johannesburg
  • Wits Art Museum
  • Spaza Art Gallery
  • Architecture
  • The Orbit Jazz Club
  • Revolution Route Johannesburg

Accommodation

For a laugh there is a night or two at the 12 Decades Art Hotel in Maboneng, and for groups the Mapungubwe Hotel in Marshalltown, downtown Johannesburg works well. The Fire and Ice in Melrose is also fun.
