The Maboneng Township Arts Experience is a nationwide South African art exhibition, curated in the homes of township residents, and accompanied by public performances of music and dance and fashion in front yards and on the streets. It is a festival, a celebration, of art.
The project began in 2000 in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, by artist Siphiwe Ngwenya. It now runs in three cities: Johannesburg, Newcastle KwaZula Natal, and Cape Town.
The Guguletu event is in its 3rd year now. 23 homes become galleries, and the homeowners the gallerists. Fine art by fine artists is exhibited in each home.
