The Soweto Hotel is the first hotel in a township in South Africa. It is situated on the historic Freedom Square, where South Africa’s Freedom Charter was signed on 26 June 1955, and across the road from Kliptown, home to some amazing street art.

From outside, it is quite foreboding, the building itself is very Soviet era brutalist, but inside is all South African, from attentive hospitality to the design touches in the rooms. It’s a pleasure to stay in a hotel that conspicuously celebrates South African struggle and post apartheid achievements, instead of the usual fawning over a bygone, colonial fantasy. It is well conceived throughout, and the exterior can be forgiven. Mostly. This is a great, comfortable base from which to explore Soweto, and we use it as our first night of our Creative Joburg programme.
