A journey into the tools for reconciliation and healing that Rwanda deployed in its incredible recovery from the 1994 genocide.

We visit the Kigali Genocide Museum with a reconciliation specialist who guides us through the genocide itself, and the approach in the years following the genocide to rebuild the nation.

With the specialist we visit an organisation specialising in reconciliation and we get to grips with some of the tools used and projects initiated to facilitate and entrench engagement, peace and reconciliation.

We recommend this experience for the end of your Rwanda visit so that visitors don’t frame Kigali as a genocide experience (much like starting Johannesburg or South Africa with the apartheid Museum, which makes it hard to experience the place beyond that narrative). Also, it is a deeply emotional experience, and it is good to do it at the end, giving you time on the flight to your next destination to really reflect on the experience.
