The Revolution Route explores the stories of struggle in Cape Town, from the armed resistance against apartheid in the 60s through the early 90s, to the revolutionary acts of the indigenous Khoi and enslaved people against colonial regimes.
While Nelson Mandela’s transition from prisoner to president is a key anchor, the bulk of this journey focuses on the figures whose names are less frequently spoken: Fred Carneson, the leader of MK in the Western Cape; Philip Kgosana, the 18-year-old who led 30,000 people to Caledon Square; and Imam Haron, the revolutionary cleric who bridged political divides.
We move spatially from the historic economic center through Langa, Athlone, and Woodstock, honoring the legacy of young soldiers like Ashley Kriel and Coline Williams. To provide full context, we also look back at historical mutinies, such as Massavana of Madagascar’s revolt aboard the slave ship Meerman.
The Revolution Route is a unique lens through which to discover the city, providing a spatial and social narrative that connects the historic center to the heart of the Cape Flats.
